Wingarra BMI founder and Managing Director, Greg O'Connor, held senior commercial positions over nearly 10 years as Corporate Taxation Manager with a number of companies, including two listed Australian public companies. One of these was one of the largest property development, investment and construction companies in Australia, with assets in excess of A$1 billion. The other was at that stage part of the ICI global group, and is today one of the major global players in the industrial and agricultural chemicals markets. He also held an appointment as Manager - Taxation Policy with the Australian subsidiary of a major Japanese property development and investment company. Prior to appointment to these commercial positions, he was an accountant in private practice servicing a diverse range of small business clients. He had previously held a number of technical positions in the Australian Taxation Office, during which time he dealt with the taxation affairs of individuals and organisations ranging from small family businesses to some of Australia's largest companies.

Greg holds the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Economics (English major) (University of Queensland)
  • Bachelor of Commerce (Univ of Qld)
  • Diploma of Education (Univ of Qld)
  • Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment (Securities Institute of Australia (SIA) - now known as the Financial Services Institute of Australia (FINSIA) following its merger with the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance (AIBF))

Since its foundation, Wingarra BMI has drawn on the financial, research and communications expertise and commercial experience of its founder to undertake an extensive range of projects for organisations across a wide range of industries. This has involved extensive stress testing and scenario testing of proposed business models, including the development of multiple alternative commercialisation pathways, the design and construction of a wide range of  customised financial models and other spreadsheet models, preparation of business plans and information memoranda and extensive involvement in negotiations with government departments and authorities, potential investors and project financiers. Wingarra BMI has also assisted numerous companies in negotiating their way through the technology commercialisation process (see the Inventors and inventions and Other services pages).

Greg has also undertaken numerous commercial research and writing projects in his own right. In this capacity, he wrote a series of 18 articles on a diverse range of investment topics - six articles each on Investment Principles, The Stock Market and Property Investment - for the Australian banking/insurance institution, Suncorp-Metway. These articles were a major part of the bank's Finance Select package which won a Silver Award in the Australian Direct Marketing Awards. The package was originally used in a pilot program with a targeted group of customers, but the response was such that it was then rolled out across the entire customer base. Copies of the first article in each of the three series can be read by clicking on the following links (each opens in a new browser):
